Alice James Books

As a reader for the Alice James Award, I read and conducted primary screening for over 1,200 poetry manuscripts. Furthermore, I organised and delegated the manuscripts to a panel of judges for secondary reading.
I learned how a book gets from manuscript to bound and printed. I liaised with editors and proofreaders, and designed and created ARCs and other pre-publication materials. I also handled inventory, prepared materials for various mail-outs and packaged/shipped books.
I contributed to advertising copy and marketing materials for books, and processed reviews, pulled quotes, etc., and devised book publicity campaigns, materials, and posts. I gained insight on all departments: editorial, marketing, sales, publicity, design, production, and (as AJB is a non-profit) also contributed to a major fundraising campaign.
Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance
Student Board Member 2021
Represented young writers in Maine for the MWPA in board meetings. Helped the board to identify opportunities for development. Learned the how the MWPA approaches decision-making and how non-profits function fiscally. Contributed to fundraising discussions.
Helped organise and set-up donor functions, public readings and other events.
Reader for Maine Literary Awards
Responsible for judging the Youth Competition in Poetry in 2021 and Short Works Poetry in 2025, reading dozens of submissions by youth from Maine. Awarded students and delivered personalized feedback.
Timekeeper and Moderator, PITCH September 2021
Acted as moderator for PITCH, an event where writers can pitch their books to literary agents. Helped prepare writers for their meetings and kept the event running smoothly with an organised schedule.
